From Poetry to Published Author: Aries Skye’s Literary Journey

For Aries Skye, storytelling began with poetry. In eighth grade, a classroom assignment ignited a passion for words that never faded. Writing became more than an outlet—it became a way to express emotions, capture experiences, and explore the complexities of love and relationships. While her early journey as a writer was deeply personal, she soon realized that her stories had the potential to reach a wider audience.

Unlike many authors who enter the publishing world with mentorship or connections, Aries built her career from the ground up. Her path was independent and self-driven, navigating the industry without the traditional backing of established publishers. A pivotal moment in her career came when a blogger who adored her work introduced her to a literary agent. That agent later became her publisher, allowing Aries to reach new heights in her literary journey.

"My grind was authentic," Aries reflects. "The shift happened when I realized that my stories weren’t just for me. They were meant to be shared, to inspire, and to remind people that Black love exists and thrives."

Writing Black Love: Representation That Matters

Aries Skye describes her creative style as "penning the beauty into Black romance." Her stories center on flawed yet non-toxic characters—individuals who face real-life struggles but choose love, healing, and growth. Her male leads are swoon-worthy, her female protagonists are bold and intelligent, and her narratives are rich with strong friendship and family bonds.

"We haven’t always seen ourselves depicted in love stories the way we should be," Aries explains. "But we love deeply, we overcome, and we build relationships that last. I want my books to show that Black love isn’t just possible—it’s powerful, enduring, and real."

Her Love On series explores themes that resonate with modern relationships. Love on the Rebound delves into mixed-weight relationships and the stigmas surrounding them. Her upcoming release, Love on Board, follows a newly divorced woman rediscovering love and self-worth. Aries’ commitment to showcasing diverse, relatable experiences is evident in every book she writes.

A Writing Process Fueled by Passion and Rituals

For Aries, writing isn’t just about putting words on a page—it’s about setting the right atmosphere. Her creative process involves a quiet room, an R&B playlist, and a signature beverage: either a cold Red Powerade for late-night writing or a Cinnamon Dolce or Mocha White Chocolate Latte for early morning sessions.

"I need my space to be clear so my thoughts can be clear," she shares. "When I finish a great writing session, it feels like I’ve been on vacation. Everything looks brand new when I come back to reality."

Overcoming Challenges and Embracing Growth

Like any creative, Aries has faced challenges, including creative blocks and the pressures of the publishing industry. Her solution? Stepping away for self-care. Whether it’s a spa day, a walk, or simply taking time for herself, she prioritizes mental clarity to keep her creativity flowing.

Aries also draws inspiration from industry giants like Ava DuVernay, Shonda Rhimes, and Issa Rae. "Their storytelling is impeccable," she says. "They inspire me to create narratives that are rich, meaningful, and unapologetically Black."

Advice for Aspiring Authors

For Black women looking to enter the literary world, Aries offers simple yet powerful advice: "Stop waiting and go for it. Write what’s in your heart. Be authentic. Fear will hold you back, but your readers will find you. Your tribe will come."
